Wards History in New Brunswick
 

1863
New Brunswick changes charter to elect alderman from three districts (four representatives each).

1871
New Brunswick adopts 6-ward system, with each ward electing two aldermen.

1915
Following two unsuccessful votes to abolish ward system and replace with five-member at-large commission, a third vote to abolish wards wins narrowly.

1970
Charter Study Commission recommends Commission form changed to five-member Council with Mayor elected separately.

1986
Proposal to adopt six-ward, three at-large Council defeated by 3:2 margin in August election.

1996
Proposal for six-ward, three at-large Council thwarted by City Council, Charter Study ordinance adopted

1997
Charter Study Commission recommends no change to government.

2008
Petition for six-ward, three at-large Council rejected by City Clerk, later overturned by Superior Court Judge, vote delayed to 2009

2009
City Council authorizes $75,000 to prevent a vote on the ward question and loses a second court battle.

November 3, 2009
Residents will finally get the chance to vote for a positive change to our city government.
